چکیده

Coastal vegetated ecosystems such as saltmarshes and seagrasses are important sinks of organic carbon (OC) total nitrogen (TN), with large global local variability, driven by the confluence many physical ecological factors. Here we show that sedimentary OC TN stocks intertidal saltmarsh (Sporobolus maritimus) seagrass (Zostera noltei) habitats increased between two- fourfold along a decreasing flow velocity gradient in Ria Formosa lagoon (south Portugal). A similar twofold increase was also observed for burial rates S. maritimus almost one order magnitude Z. noltei. Stable isotope mixing models identify allochthonous particulate matter main source to pools both (39–68%). This is second estimate first noltei, small, fast-growing species widely distributed Europe (41,000 ha) which area presently expanding (8600 ha 2000s). Its wide range (29–99 Mg ha−1) (15–122 g m2 y−1) highlight importance investigating drivers variability develop blue models. The (7–11 (2–4 m−2 noltei were generally higher than elsewhere. Short Term CO2 Enrichment Increases Carbon Sequestration of Air-Exposed Intertidal Communities of a Coastal Lagoon

In situ production responses of air-exposed intertidal communities under CO2 enrichment are reported here for the first time. We assessed the short-term effects of CO2 on the light responses of the net community production (NCP) and community respiration (CR) of intertidal Z. noltei and unvegetated sediment communities of Ria Formosa lagoon, when exposed to air. NCP and CR were measured in situ...

Trace Elements and Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotopes in Organisms from a Tropical Coastal Lagoon

Trace elements (Fe, Mn, Al, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Hg, and As) and stable isotope ratios (delta(13)C and delta(15)N) were analyzed in sediments, invertebrates, and fishes from a tropical coastal lagoon influenced by iron ore mining and processing activities to assess the differences in trace element accumulation patterns among species and to investigate relations with trophic levels of the org...

Application of the Mohid-2D model to a mesotidal temperate coastal lagoon

A mathematical model can be considered as an approximate reconstruction of a real phenomenon. All parameterizations and approximations used in models lead to deviations of the model results from nature. It is an accepted requirement that a numerical model of estuarine hydrodynamics should be verified, calibrated and validated before used in a practical application. However, the procedures to pe...
